Oh Ye Denver Birds began as a home recording project for Brisbane based songwriter Dominic Stephens at the beginning of 2009. The past year has seen these original intentions grow to a band of six members who add to the ambient and experimental dream-like folk textures.

Since receiving support from Triple J’s “Unearthed Feature Artists” in early 09, Oh Ye Denver birds have shared the stage with some of Australia’s most forthcoming artists including The John Steel Singers, Richard In Your Mind and Cuthbert and The Night Walkers, as well as Seattle’s folk songstress Tiny Vipers.

Zealous and talented, this group yield an unexpected atmosphere and tone, reminiscent of Dirty Projectors, Yeasayer and the green hills of OYDB’s formative years, combining rich accapella sensibilities and an eclectic approach to the movement of sound.

Laced with brilliant colour and creativity rarely developed so early in a bands career, Oh Ye Denver Birds now plan to record and tour their debut EP in 2010. In the brief space of a year, this band have gathered a deserved level of interest from both the industry and public alike, and will surely prove to be one of the premier acts from their home town of Brisbane in years to come.

Folk impresario Liz Stringer returns to Brisbane for a rare headline performance launching her new album “Tides of Time” at the Troubadour Friday April 30.

Liz has had a stellar run, with highly successful back to back national tours of both her sophomore release, Pendulum, and debut “Soon”. A personal invitation to be part of Deborah Conway’s ‘Broad series’, a standout appearance on SBS’s infamous Rock Whiz & the ABC’s Sunday Arts program, and landing the coveted Melbourne Songwriter Award.

More recently Liz has toured nationally with legend, Eric Bibb, Ember Swift, Jen Cloher & the Endless Sea and Aria award winner, Mia Dyson. Liz is a festival stable having secured billing at the Falls Festival, the Brunswick Festival, Apollo Bay Festival, Port Fairy Festival and Queenscliff.

Witness why the Herald Sun refers to Liz as, “An old fashioned Springsteen-style story teller with a soulful mature voice…A breath of fresh air”.

“A beguiling singer and accomplished songwriter, it is Stringer’s prodigious command of the steel-string guitar and banjo that distinguishes her from the pack. Man can she play.”The Age

Mistletone proudly presents The Bats, darlings of the Dunedin indie pop scene, playing their first Brisbane show in over seven years. The Bats are flag bearers for the legacy of the Flying Nun sound, yet their new music is vital and sparkling as ever. The band has never broken up and is touring in the original lineup of Robert Scott, Paul Kean, Kaye Woodward and Malcolm Grant. The Bats’ latest album The Guilty Office (now in its second pressing on Mistletone and available locally through Inertia) was deemed “as fine a collection of songs from the pen of Robert Scott as there ever was”, and their recent worldwide shows won glowing reviews and adoring fans. Don’t miss the return of The Bats at The Troubadour on Saturday April 24 (ANZAC Day weekend) with Greg Brady and The Anchors.

There are many reasons why musicians make solo albums. For some, the delicate artistic temperament simply
cannot bear collaborating with or being around other people. For others, collaboration is a truly wonderful experience, but a time comes when they just want to test themselves and see if they can make something special alone.

Seja could never belong to the first example. This debut solo album, We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares, does not sluggishly lumber from extreme isolation. Emotionally sophisticated, what reveals is the sort of mixed euphoria astronauts, or pilots, may feel when an affair begins mid-flight… or whenever joy is tempered with survival doubts. If it doesn’t sound like a debut, it’s because Seja has spent years playing synthesizers in Sekiden and Regurgitator, two of Brisbane’s finest ever pop bands. Late last year Seja found herself wanting, curious to discover if she could make an album alone. So she stayed home a lot, writing songs, recording lots of old synthesizers, and using her beautifully clear voice more than she ever had before.

An artist constantly wanting to push her own creative boundaries, Seja has also lent her keyboarding and singing skills to touring buddies such as SPOD, David McCormack and The Polaroids, and The Mess Hall on an ad-hoc basis.

There are a few collaborators: Saul Jarvie sings, having turned an instrumental that was emailed to him into one of the album’s best pop songs, Regurgitator’s Quan Yeomans and Spod assist with some structural suggestions and beats, and Cameron Bruce lends a hand in providing some beautiful piano playing for the album’s final track. Seja’s brother Mirko produced, mixed and mastered the album, allowing its wide spaces to be further opened, and amplified.

The instrumentation is virtually all vintage electronics (Seja is known for her loyalty to vintage synths), and it’s with a simple, neat song structure we hear the stuff of classic pop. But the context is modern, and lyrically a touch hard-nosed, too busy living the present to be looking over its shoulder, ala ‘80s fans and alumni M83, granted it’s always in a dream. Crumbly, hand-crafted synth tones evoke such dreaminess, but the thematic focus of We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares never loses its way. Despite what Seja may tell you in a song.

The Scrapes, formed in Brisbane late in the summer of 2008, are an unusual duo of feedback drenched guitar and scraping, epic violin. Their music is rooted firmly in the traditions of western classical music while representing an attempt to transgress them. It is music that evokes landscapes and acts of nature as well as cerebral landscapes. Inspired equally by composers such as Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and La Monte Young, sound artists and pioneers of the drone such as Tony Conrad and Spacemen 3, and the dark, demented sounds of the underground of rock music, The Scrapes can be at once immersive and chaotic in a live setting where wild improvisation and high volume come into the fold.

After five years of non stop touring, four albums, and numerous accolades, one of Australia’s most acclaimed and unique songwriters Gareth Liddiard of The Drones has decided to put his pedals on ice for a while.

With his debut solo record set for release later in the year, Gareth will be undertaking a special run of acoustic shows to preview songs off the upcoming album alongside all your Drones favourites.

“The show gave Liddiard a chance to play a few songs the band don’t typically play in their live sets as well as providing quieter, though no less harrowing, interpretations of some The Drones’ most enduring songs … The intensity of the songs was tempered with Liddiard’s affable, funny and engaging manner between songs … The tales, sung with Liddiard’s cracked and damaged vocals, cut right to the core of humanity’s morality, corruption, and search for redemption. Amazing stuff.” - Polaroids Of Androids – 27 February 2009

“For fans of Liddiard’s verse, the unplugged show was a way to experience its horrible, apocalyptic glory free from rock postures and the distracting volume of amplification. His is a savage vision and one that’s often based in the past, but somehow it still feels more relevant than a thousand columnists in The Weekend Australian trying to give utterance to similar themes. If you haven’t listened yet, listen. And if The Drones’ screeching guitar hurts your ears, read the lyrics instead. As for Liddiard, if he plays solo again, don’t miss it. He’s likeable, he’s brilliant and he’s ours. And for better or for worse, compatriots, we’re his too.” - Musicfeeds.com.au – 5 March 2009

“You can certainly hear the influence of that period’s dark local underground in The Drones’ capacity for assault and febrile movement, not to mention singer Gareth Liddiard’s lean charisma and often brilliant lyrical ability.” - Sydney Morning Herald – 30 October 2008

“But it was in the final song for this evening, Sixteen Straws, when Liddiard broke a string and declared that he doesn’t do encores, that the crowd really showed their appreciation for the talented fellow who happens to front one of Australia’s most loved underrated music success stories.” - Fasterlouder.com.au – 12 March 2009

Charming audiences with catchy, heartfelt ditties, matadors of the stage, Pioneers of Flight have built up an intimate and revealing show that is coloured with a subtle blend of alt-country twang. Drawing on musical influences such as John Lennon and Neil Young, combined with the effects of red wine and recording in the rural surrounds of Esk, the duo have created what appears on surface level to be happy sounding tunes, yet purvey more serious undertones of melancholy and longing. The result, their debut EP, A Gentlemen’s Agreement will be launched in true alt-country fashion at the Brisbane’s very own Troubadour on Wednesday 14th April.

Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia, the slow and hazy psychedelic jams of New Mexico’s Brightblack Morning Light, playing The Troubadour on SAT APRIL 10 with fellow New Mexican Rio En Medio.

The band was founded by the gentle naturalist ND Shineywater, hailing from Alabama, birthplace of icons such as Sun Ra & Diana Ross. Shineywater since has moved to live a minimal life off the coal/nuclear grid in New Mexico, by using only four solar panels in his small adobe dwelling. For this tour Brightblack Morning Light will consist of Shineywater with two accompanists: Danielle Stech-Homsy (keyboards/vocals) who has released two fine solo albums under the name Rio en Medio, and Cannupa Luger, a Native American artist and percussionist who lives in the mountains nearby Shineywater’s home.

Brightblack Morning Light released two LPs on Matador Records: the languid, self titled Brightblack Morning Light (2005), followed by the soul-blues-gospel tinged Motion To Rejoin (2008). Shineywater previously released an album under the name Brightblack titled Ala.cali.tucky, produced by Paul Oldham and featuring his brother Will (Bonnie Prince Billy), in 2004, and a 2002 split 7″ with Bonnie Prince Billy under the name Rainywood.

Recordings don’t come as often as live shows for Shineywater & Brightblack Morning Light. The live shows however, have been historically marked with performances with Os Mutantes, Vashti Bunyan and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott as well as small, rurally curated “Quiet Quiet” festivals with Joanna Newson, Lavender Diamond & Michael Hurley. BBML curated San Francisco’s Noise Pop at Great American Music Hall and have performed at many festivals in Europe and the UK including All Tomorrows Parties curated by Slint. In 2009, BBML were invited to All Tomorrows Parties curated by My Bloody Valentine, and toured with My Bloody Valentine around America as well as opening for
Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions in San Francisco.

Special guests will be Rio en Medio, bewitching new-folk from New Mexican native Danielle Stech-Homsy. Rio en Medio’s beautiful songs skillfully balance organic and electronic sounds and showcase Danielle’s delicate vocal harmonies. Rio en Medio has toured worldwide with many notable bands Grizzly Bear, Cocorosie,Patrick Wolf and Devendra Banhart, to name a few and this will be her first time in Australia.

The journey begun in 2007 when the boys hit the road with fellow Central Coast rockers Something with Numbers. Quickly building a loyal fan base further national tours followed with The Lazys sharing the stage with bands such as Against Me (US), Hollywood’s Ms Juliet Lewis, UK’s The Answer and Aussie bands such as Gyroscope, The living end, Grinspoon and more. The band also did many of their own headline tours and made festival appearances at both Come Together and Coaster festival.

In 2008, the band took their next step in the studio with Producer Phil Mckellar (Grinspoon, Silverchair). Double A side single All fired up/ Union of the Underdogs was released in 2008 and caught the attention of Michael Chugg who put the boys forward for the inaugural JD set (Jack Daniels Set).

The boys then set off around Australia showcasing their unstoppable live show. In November 2008 after securing in excess of 3000 vote, The Lazys were crowned JD Set winners and were presented in Melbourne by Gyroscope and Jabba (channel V) to an anticipating audience.

2009 saw the boys sign their publishing over the Sony ATV and release their self titled debut EP. Recorded in the legendary Albert’s studios, home of ACDC, it’s a showcase of the bands shear ability and consistent development. Results in from Triple M’s best Aussie songs of 2009 saw track 1 from the EP ‘Hey Man’ Poll at number 14. Sunshine City also making its mark on FOX Sports this summer being used as the theme song for its summer 09/10 campaign.

2010 insight, The Lazys have been busy recording their debut album ‘Prison Earth’. The Album explores the vicious truth about the world from ones personal existence to global injustice. There are some escapes yet sometimes ones perception exceeds their mental state of mind. The Lazys will be touring the 1st single from the record in April/May 2010 and release the full length album in June 2010.
